In the past year or so, it’s become commonplace for Call of Duty developers to include secret changes with patches. In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone, Infinity Ward made a number of buffs and nerfs that weren’t included with the patch notes. While it looked like this year might be different, it seems Treyarch is following in IW’s footsteps. Earlier this week, Black Ops Cold War received an update that was meant to address a number of bugs. However, it appears that the developers also included a silent buff to the previously nerfed FFAR assault rifle.

FFAR buffed with recent Black Ops Cold War patch

During the beginning of Black Ops Cold War, the FFAR was easily the most dominant weapon in the game. Featuring high damage and little recoil, there was really no stopping the assault rifle at most ranges. Of course, whenever a weapon displays this kind of versatility, developers more often than not take action.

Around two weeks after the release of Cold War, Treyarch decided it was time for a nerf to the AR. The community agreed that a nerf was needed, but they didn’t agree with the huge changes that came the FFAR’s way. In a huge nerf, Treyarch increased the weapon’s horizontal recoil to the point where it became nearly unusable.

The player base obviously complained about this issue and the devs apparently listened. While it was assumed a buff would arrive with Season One, it appears to have come a week early. According to pro player Bryan “Apathy” Zhelyazkov, the devs buffed the FFAR quite a bit.

The in-game stats prove that the FFAR has improved from its previous version. The recoil is much more manageable, and in turn, the weapon is far easier to use. While it remains to be seen if the FFAR will return to the meta, it’s always nice to have more usable weapons. However, most fans don’t want Treyarch to make a habit of silently changing things in Black Ops Cold War.
